It was March 24th, 1945 and in a field outside Fluren, Germany, Private
George Peters landed his parachute along with 10 other American
paratroopers. They landed just 75 yards from a German machinegun and were
pinned down. On his own initiative, Private Peters stood and made a charge
at the machinegun. This drove the deadly fire away from the rest of his
comrades. Halfway to his objective, Peters was hit, fell, then got back up.
He got a bit closer and was torn up by more machinegun fire. This time he
was too badly wounded to rise but he began to crawl...
