In honor of both Memorial Day and the 57th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion of June 1944, we are featuring three recipients who were recognized for their actions during the Normandy campaign that began on D-Day. The three headstones of the featured recipients are shown above at the American Cemetery in Normandy, France. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was a Brigadier General who adamantly sought to lead his men onto the shores of Normandy and finally got his request approved after two denials. He repeatedly led groups of soldiers from the beach, over the seawall and established them inland. His leadership helped make possible the establishment of a beachhead in France. Jimmie W. Monteith Jr. was a 1st Lieutenant that landed with the initial assault waves and among other things he personally led two tanks on foot through a mine field and heavy enemy fire. Frank D. Peregory was a Technical Sergeant who intrepidly marched alone up a hill and upon a German machinegun emplacement that was decimating Allied troops. He hopped into a trench leading to the machinegun and encountered a squad of enemy riflemen killing 8 and causing another 3 to surrender. Learn more about these extraordinary actions by reading their citations. |
