Fox Directed Artillery Fire Upon his
Position to Aid Defeat of Nazis
German soldiers infiltrated the Italian town of Sommocolonia in civilian
clothes on Christmas Day in 1944. The following day the Germans overran the
town. The U.S. Infantry was forced to withdraw but Lieutenant John Fox and
some other members of his observer party voluntarily remained to direct
artillery fire. As the Germans continued to press their attack, Lieutenant
Fox was forced to direct fire directly upon his position...
