Honoring the Memory of Recipients with Our Gravemarker Program
Our mission is to support and uphold the legacy of the Medal of Honor and to share the stories of its Recipients. This is why we created the Gravemarker Program.
The Gravemarker Program supports the creation of gravemarkers and headstones for those Recipients who have passed. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s role is to step in when the Veterans Administration cannot provide this distinction. These efforts help keep the stories of Recipients alive in their communities for future generations.
Peter Roth Gravemarker Dedication
Fort Chadbourne, Texas, will dedicate a cenotaph on August 13, 2021, to Medal of Honor Recipient Peter Roth, who served during the Indian Campaigns.
On September 12, 1874, Roth was carrying dispatches when he and his patrol were attacked. They fought bravely throughout the daylong attack and on November 4, 1874, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. Recipient Roth passed away in his home country of Germany long after the war, and his gravesite has been lost over time.
Fort Chadbourne’s dedication ceremony will be open to the public, and invited guests include Medal of Honor Recipients Patrick Brady and Robert O’Malley. To learn more about the event, click here.
Terrence Begley Gravemarker Dedication
On August 21, Albany Rural Cemetery in New York will dedicate a cenotaph to Medal of Honor Recipient Terrence Begley, who bravely served during the Civil War. Recipient Begley was awarded the Medal for seizing the colors of a Confederate soldier while exposed to heavy gunfire. (“Colors” refers to the highly valued set of flags carried by a military unit into battle.) While he arrived safely behind friendly lines on this mission, he was later killed in action at Reams Station in Virginia. His remains were not recovered.
