Ways You Can Commemorate Memorial Day
Memorial Day is an important day for us to observe as it is a time to honor and remember those who have given their lives in the line of duty for the place we call home.
With the holiday weekend quickly approaching, we’ve put together a few ideas on how you can commemorate Memorial Day with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
Memorial Day Lessons:
This year, the Character Development Program is offering lessons centered around Memorial Day for educators to incorporate into their classrooms. The lessons focus on patriotism, courage, and sacrifice, teaching students about the importance of Memorial Day in America.
In addition to these new lessons, teachers will also have access to a new video featuring several Medal of Honor Recipients remembering the fallen members of the U.S. Armed Forces that they have served with.
Memorial Day Activities:
There are many ways you can remember and honor fallen service members on Memorial Day. One way is to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance. This is an annual event that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3:00PM local time on Memorial Day, to pause for one minute to remember those who have died in military service. Another way to mark the day is by visiting a war memorial or a Veteran’s cemetery in your town. Your family can bring flowers, a wreath, or a flag to leave in honor of the service members who died fighting for our country.
As the world has turned in a more virtual direction, you may be looking for ways to connect online. One way to celebrate is by brushing up on American history and learning about those who have served. We invite you to read about those who have received the highest military award for valor, the Medal of Honor Recipients, and share the stories of those Recipients who gave their lives for our country with your friends and family on social media to shed light on the importance of this holiday.
Memorial Day Donations:
Another way to recognize Memorial Day is by giving to organizations that focus on honoring, remembering, and supporting families of the fallen, active-duty military members, and Veterans.
Through our Veterans Outreach Program, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society connects Medal of Honor Recipients with organizations in the public and private sector who are tackling the resiliency and wellness challenges that Veteran and active-duty military communities face.
Additionally, the Society protects and preserves the Medal of Honor, its dignity, and its history. By maintaining a museum, library, archives, and research collection, the Society plays an integral role in ensuring the stories of the Medal of Honor Recipients, especially those killed in the line of duty, are never forgotten.
We invite you to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for our country by making a charitable contribution to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society this Memorial Day. With your support, the Society will be able to continue to preserve the legacy of the Medal of Honor and its Recipients.
