MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.—The Congressional Medal of Honor Society honors the service of
U.S. Army Captain Emil J. Kapaun on the repatriation of his remains to his home state of Kansas.
Chaplain Kapaun’s selflessness and courage under enemy fire and his leadership and commitment to the care of his fellow prisoners of war—both spiritually and physically—inspired those who served alongside him in the Korean War and continue to do so today.
In addition to Chaplain Kapaun, the remains of U.S. Navy Ensign Francis Flaherty, another Medal of Honor Recipient, were repatriated to his home state this year. There are still 77 Medal of Honor Recipients whose remains are unidentified.
The return of both Chaplain Kapaun and Ensign Flaherty’s remains provides an opportunity for their families, Americans, and the 67 living Medal of Honor Recipients to honor their sacrifice.
