Congressional Medal of Honor Society Joins Tee It Up for the Troops to Support Veterans
SCOTTSDALE, AZ—Five Medal of Honor recipients and 19 other U.S. combat veterans were in Scottsdale today to participate in Tee It Up for the Troops’ inaugural golf event on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Championship Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Club.
The sold-out golf tournament benefitted both Tee It Up for the Troops and the Congressional Medal of Honor Society (the Society) and its foundation. Tee It Up for the Troops’ mission as a veterans-support organization is to honor, remember, respect and support all those who serve(d) in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Society is the Congressionally chartered organization for Medal of Honor recipients that promotes patriotism and the legacy of the Medal of the Honor through preservation, outreach and education initiatives.
The day began with the National Anthem sung by Medal of Honor Recipient Jim McCloughan, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2017 for his service as a combat medic during the Vietnam War. The assembled group split into foursomes to play the 18-hole course, each with a Medal of Honor recipient or a local combat-wounded veteran.
Tim Wegscheid, President and Executive Director of Tee It Up for the Troops commented, “We were extremely honored to have these Medal of Honor recipients participating in today’s outing and are pleased to support the work of the Society to preserve the legacy of the Medal of Honor.”
John Lyberger, PGA Director of Golf at Desert Mountain Club added, “We were pleased to be able to provide this opportunity for our members to support veterans through these outstanding organizations and were honored to host several Medal of Honor Recipients and wounded combat veterans at the club today.”
While in Scottsdale, the five Medal of Honor recipients who traveled to participate in the fundraiser are taking the opportunity to visit students at Shea Middle School in Phoenix and Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, and police academy students at Phoenix Regional Police Academy.
Leroy Petry, Medal of Honor recipient and President of the Society commented, “We are grateful to Tee It Up for the Troops for the work they do each day raising money and awareness to support veterans and their unwavering support of the Society. We were humbled by the warm welcome we received from Desert Mountain Club and its members today and the joyful fellowship we shared. We are all looking forward to meeting with the students and professionals at tomorrow’s school and police academy visits.”
