Thank You to Our Community Service Awardees
Every year, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society recognizes ordinary people who do extraordinary things through our Citizen Honors Awards.
Through a single moment of outstanding bravery or selfless service to others, these nominees uphold the American spirit and the Medal of Honor’s core values.
One of the categories of the Citizen Honors Awards is the Community Service Award, which recognizes community-based organizations for their dedication to supporting military service members and their families.
Here are some of the organizations that have received this award since its inception.
Healing Household 6
In 2019, Healing Household 6 was named the Community Service Award Honoree for its efforts to connect caregivers of US Veterans with the essential resources needed to strengthen and support their families, specifically as it relates to their mental and emotional health.
Veterans Heritage Project
The Veterans Heritage Project connects middle and high school students to US military veterans through an after-school educational enrichment program where students can interview those who have served. As a result of this program, thousands of veterans’ oral histories have been donated to the Library of Congress.
To thank this organization for its dedication to inspiring the next generation, the Veterans Heritage Project received the Community Service Award in 2018.
Fisher House Foundation
The Fisher House Foundation was selected for the Community Service Award in 2017 for its support of US service members and their families. Fisher House provides an extensive network of homes where military and Veterans’ families can stay at no cost while their loved one receives critical medical treatment.
Thanks to its ongoing, heroic work, over 307,000 families have received their assistance.
United Through Reading
In 2016, United Through Reading was awarded the Community Service Award for its efforts in helping deployed servicemen and women connect with their children back home. UTR gives these military service members the opportunity to be video-recorded so they can virtually read books to their children in nearly 200 locations worldwide.
We are proud to have presented these organizations with an award for their role in supporting our nation’s military service members and their families.
If you would like to nominate an organization that has made an impact on you, your family, or your community, our award nominations for 2022 will be opening this summer.
