Corporal Dunham ordered his squad toward the fighting to defend the convoy. Soon after, a deadly grenade flew toward his men. Dunham did not hesitate to leap and cover the grenade with his helmet and body in a heart-stopping moment of bravery. 

He saved his men, but this act of courage came at a steep price – Corporal Jason Dunham died eight days later. Through this extraordinary tale of real-life heroism and sacrifice, students will be on the edge of their seats as they learn the power of:

This lesson revolves around Sergeant First Class Alwyn Cashe, who was serving as a platoon sergeant in Iraq in 2005 when he was assigned a dangerous nocturnal mission that required navigating through darkness. 

During this mission, a roadside bomb exploded, and flames engulfed his vehicle. Cashe escaped but never stopped fighting to rescue his comrades trapped inside, even when his clothes caught on fire. 

Despite the excruciating pain, Cashe worked tirelessly to get his soldiers the medical attention they needed. Cashe died a month later from his injuries. After hearing this impossible tale of a real-life hero, your students will be transformed by learning the power of:

War on Terror Lessons of Commitment from Florent Groberg

Captain Florent Grober was born in France and immigrated to the United States at the age of 11. He became a US citizen at the age of 18, 7 months before September 11, 2001. Groberg wanted to drop out of university and enlist, but his parents convinced him to stay in school. 

“This is one of the lessons my father taught me,” explained Groberg. “He said, ‘The one thing I ask of you is when you start something, you finish it.’”

So, Groberg enlisted after he graduated as a captain and served as a Personal Security Detachment Commander in Afghanistan. One day, when escorting a team to a weekly meeting, he noticed that something wasn’t right – something felt off. 

“I saw this kid, 18 to 22 years old, and he was just out of place,” remembered Groberg. “I remember thinking, ‘Where did you come from? What is going on here?’ At that point, everything changes. I know there’s something wrong.

“So, I left my position and walked toward him as fast as I could. And I grabbed him by the chest. That’s when I realized – OK, this is a suicide vest.” 

With some help from Sergeant Mahoney, Groberg pushed the suicide bomber down to the ground and used his own body as a shield. The bomb exploded, severely wounding Captain Groberg and killing others. But something unexpected occurred.

The commotion prompted a second bomber to detonate his vest prematurely, which limited the damage it caused and saved lives. Through this incredible account of bravery, sacrifice, and a commitment to the greater good, students will be inspired and awed by the power of:
