The Medal of Honor tells a story of its own, and preserving this story is at the heart of the Society’s mission. Chartered by Congress in 1958, the Society seeks to educate, connect, inspire, preserve, and support the Recipients and their work through several outreach programs.
As we move into 2021, we look forward to partnering with you in new ways to perpetuate the legacy of the Medal of Honor and inspire the next generation to display the values of the Medal. With your support, we can make a difference in the lives of people across the country.
As we continue to partner with new ambassadors and organizations to honor the sacrifice of the Recipients, we hope to inspire future generations as well. Through programs like the Character Development Program, Veterans Outreach Program and Recipient Outreach Program, the Recipients meet with students, teachers, Veterans and citizens to teach them about the importance of the values of the Medal of Honor: courage, sacrifice, integrity, commitment, patriotism, and citizenship.
By inspiring the next generation to embody these American values, we can encourage the betterment of communities across the country. Will you partner with us this year to preserve the legacy of the Medal of Honor and make this resolution a reality?
The Medal of Honor recognizes our nation’s distinguished military service members for their gallantry, intrepidity and uncommon valor in action. Since 1863, only 3,507 individuals have received the Medal. As this is not an award that is “won” or “earned,” the Recipients are never called “winners.” Rather, the Medal is awarded, bestowed upon, or received.
These Recipients have served in the U.S. Armed Forces in all five branches; here is the total number of Medals from each branch:
You can support the Recipients and the legacy of the Medal of Honor by sharing Recipients’ stories, partnering with us as an ambassador, and subscribing to our newsletter.
