Join Us for Our Webinar with Recipient Melvin Morris
Every month, our Character Development Program hosts virtual interviews with Medal of Honor Recipients to inspire students around the United States with stories of bravery and valor.
On April 21st, Recipient Melvin Morris will be joining us to discuss his service and answer questions from students and educators. This is a great opportunity for middle and high school students to hear directly from a Medal of Honor Recipient.
About Recipient Morris
Melvin Morris was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the Army as commander of a strike force during the Vietnam War.
In combat operations on September 17th, 1969, his affiliated companies encountered an enemy minefield and were engaged by a hostile force. During this time, Staff Sergeant Morris learned that a fellow team commander had been killed; he immediately reorganized his men in an effective assault posture so that he could recover his comrade’s body.
He took two men with him on his mission, both of whom were wounded by enemy fire. Morris assisted them back to friendly force lines, then effectively eliminated four enemy bunkers on his way to his fallen team commander. After retrieving his comrade, he was wounded three times but continued forward to friendly lines. He was successful in his mission; on March 18, 2014, Staff Sergeant Morris was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism and selflessness above the call of duty.
