During Memorial Day weekend, we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, including the 651 Medal of Honor Recipients who gave their lives in the line of duty to not only to protect our freedom, but to also save the lives of their fellow service members. Civil War Brevet Brigadier General Delavan Bates fought bravely in the Civil War. In the midst of trying to protect his troops, he died in the line of duty. He is one of 30 Recipients who were awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously from the Civil War. Learn more about the hundreds of other Recipients during this conflict. Vietnam War Oscar Austin was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his courage and heroism during the Vietnam War. After noticing an enemy grenade, he leaped between a fellow injured marine and the grenade, absorbing the effects of its detonation. Somalia Campaign Gary Gordon was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his courage and heroism during the Somalia Campaign. During this conflict, Gordon fought fearlessly to protect his crew until he became fatally wounded. His selfless actions resulted in saving his pilot’s life. War on Terrorism (Iraq) Michael Monsoor was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his courage and heroism during the War on Terrorism in Iraq. He selflessly threw himself onto an enemy grenade to absorb the force of the explosion with his body, saving the lives of his two teammates. He remained at the controls of a damaged seaplane to save the lives of his aircrew members.
