5 Ways To Show Courage Every Day
Choosing to bring courage to every facet of your life isn’t an easy task. It requires you to pull yourself out of your comfort zone for a cause, value, belief,…
Last week, we discussed the Society’s New Year’s resolution to perpetuate the legacy of the Medal of Honor and inspire the next generation to display the values of the Medal through programs like the Character Development Program, Veterans Outreach Program, and Recipient Outreach Program.
Through these initiatives, made possible by your ongoing support, Medal of Honor Recipients inspire students, teachers, veterans, and citizens by teaching them about the importance of the values of the Medal of Honor: courage, sacrifice, integrity, commitment, patriotism, and citizenship.
After all of the uncertainties and losses experienced in 2020, we believe it is more important than ever to uphold these values – not only to be the best versions of ourselves, but to encourage, aid, and inspire all in our circle of influence as we kick off the New Year.
Here are a few ways you can display the Medal’s values in 2021.
Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the strength to face your fears. It takes courage to do the right thing when the wrong thing would be easier. It takes courage to embrace your fears and refuse to back down. It takes courage to stand alone for what you believe in. The next time you are faced with a difficult decision, first know that it’s ok to be afraid, and then choose courage in spite of it.
Sacrifice is the act of putting the needs of others above your own. While many military service members display the ultimate act of sacrifice by laying down their lives for our country, we know that there are opportunities for selflessness in our everyday lives. One way you can practice sacrifice is by detaching yourself from your own self-interests when engaging with others. If you see someone in need, stop and see if there’s anything you can do to help, even if it’s not convenient for you. The smallest sacrifices add up to make a big difference and contribute to the common good.
Patriotism is offering devoted loyalty and support to your nation. It is something you feel in your heart and demonstrate in your actions. Patriotism has no political affiliation, and it is far more than a display of proper flag etiquette. To practice patriotism, first, consider your country’s freedoms and values, and then place them above your personal preferences. Demonstrate those values that make our nation great and set the example for others.
Citizenship means showing loyalty, compassion, involvement, and respect in your community, and assuming personal responsibility in your role as a United States citizen. One of the best ways to do this is by volunteering your time to serve in your community in some capacity. Try finding a nonprofit in your area whose mission moves you and lend a hand in the New Year.
To display integrity is to practice honesty, ethics, and honor, even when no one is watching. The first step here is to determine what integrity looks like in your own life and then develop a personal code of conduct that demands consistent ethical standards for your behavior. This may stem from your religion, family tradition, or from some other formative experience. Not only does this value shape you into the best version of yourself, but you will find yourself building rapport, admiration, and trust from others as you display honorable character.
Commitment is following through on your promises, no matter what. This value is two-fold. On one hand, it requires you to really think through what you are committing yourself to. Don’t agree to take on obligations that you don’t intend to follow through with. On the other hand, once you have given your word to show up or take action, take ownership and stay true to your word.
As we start off 2021, we hope you will consider implementing these core values into your resolutions. By putting these principles into practice in your day-to-day life, you’ll be doing your part to make the world a better place.
