Secretary of the Navy Robert B. Anderson presents the Medal of Honor for John E. Kilmer to his mother, Lois B. Kilmer, at the Pentagon, on 8 July 1953. The Medal of Honor is the United States' highest military award for valor in combat. John E. Kilmer, a Navy Medical Corpsman serving with the 1st Marine Division, was killed as a result of his valorous actions during the Korean War.
