Randy Shughart & Gary Gordon Volunteered to Protect Wounded Soldiers Defying Innumerable Odds
Randy Shughart & Gary Gordon were in the lead helicopter on an assault mission in the capital of Mogadishu. This occurred In the midst of  intense enemy gunfire, rockets and grenades which downed two Black Hawk helicopters.  They were now called on to provide protective fire from their helicopter at both crash sites. When Master Sergeant Gary Gordon learned that ground forces weren't available to protect the second crash site he unhesitatingly volunteered to leave the protection of his helicopter and protect four wounded soldiers from the downed copter. His superiors took some convincing since the odds of success were against Gordon. But upon his third request to volunteer he finally got the go ahead and one of his subordinates, Shughart, also volunteered to drop from the Black Hawk to the crash site.
